Do tourists need a permit?
Yes. The official ePermit portal states that non-native visitors require an entry permit, with specified exemptions for government and armed-forces personnel and their families. Holiday travellers should follow the Tourist category requirements.
A hotel reservation, flight ticket or agency enquiry does not itself grant permission to enter. The issued permit needs to match your approved travel.
What has changed?
At the time of review, the official portal says Tourist applications no longer require sponsorship or a Police Clearance Certificate upload. Older articles may still describe those steps. Follow the portal’s current instructions rather than an old checklist.
The portal also states a maximum of six applicants per application and requires foreign tourists to hold a valid passport and visa for India. Confirm nationality-specific island eligibility before planning.
A practical sequence
- Choose a feasible island plan and confirm the supporting travel and accommodation details needed for the application.
- Open the official ePermit portal, register or sign in, and use the appropriate Tourist category.
- Follow the current document checklist and enter the travellers, islands and dates accurately.
- Track the application and respond to any official requests.
- Check the issued permit before travelling and keep it with the required travel documents.
